DNR: Half of State, Including Lewis County, Faces Extreme Landslide Risk

Posted

Half of the state is facing an extreme risk for landslides, according to new forecasts by the Department of Natural Resources.

On Tuesday, Lewis and Thurston counties were both facing extreme landslide risk, which means landslides are expected to be frequent and widespread.

The most recent forecasts, updated at 10:32 a.m. Wednesday, show all Western Washington and some Eastern Washington counties facing extreme landslide risk.

Landslide warning signs include cracks growing in the ground or downslope movement of rocks and soil, according to the DNR.

Sudden changes in creek levels, increased sediment, and sounds of cracking wood or moving rocks can also be an indication of impending landslides.

Mossyrock Road East has been closed at milepost 0.10 near Blankenship Road since 9:08 a.m. due to a mudslide.

Smaller slides have been reported throughout Southwest Washington.
