Sheriff’s Office Advises Pope’s Kids Place Students to Trick or Treat Safely

The Pope’s Kids Place Early Learning Center got a visit from the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office Wednesday morning, to remind children to trick or treat safely.

Chief Deputy Stacy Brown asked about a dozen children at the center what their Halloween costumes would be and gave them a primer on Halloween safety, before reading them two stories and inviting them to sit in the front and back seats of her patrol SUV.

Shawna Bruce, of Pope’s Kids Place, said this is the first event of its kind at the early learning center.

“I’m curious to hear what they have to say,” she said before the event.

Brown told the children not to trick or treat alone, and said they should use a flashlight.

“You always go with a buddy and a parent or an adult,” she said.

She told the children never to go into a stranger’s house, and reminded them to wait to eat their candy until an adult looks it over.

“I think teachers and adults know those rules and I think they’re probably reinforced,” she said.

Bruce and Brown both said it is important for the children to have positive interactions with law enforcement officers.

“For any school, I think it’s just really important that we’re a constant in their life and we’re part of the community  … so they don’t see us just when something bad’s happening,” Brown said.

Brown also brought pumpkins for the children and candy bars for their teachers. She said she hopes to go back to the early learning center on a regular basis.

“I definitely want to go back,” Brown said. “It was awesome. I loved it.”
