Boys BB: Winlock Tops Tenino; Ritchey Leads Loggers Past Pe Ell

    WINLOCK — Winlock rallied late to get the edge in a rivalry match against Tenino, 61-51, here Thursday in boys nonleague basketball action.

    “This was a good test for us tonight. Tenino is a good team and the rivalry is growing between us,” Cardinal coach Ross Hojem said.

    Enrique Hernandez led the Cardinals with 21 points while teammate Phillip Smerek scored 20 points.

    “Enrique really hustled tonight, but I don’t want to take anything from the team. Our team as a whole worked hard and really rewarded themselves tonight with their success,” Hojem said. “We were able to play well for all four quarters. That is the great thing about our boys is that they are willing to keep improving.”

    Hojem had high regards for the Tenino team.

    “I have to give credit to Tenino. They have some players that can really cause problems for any team. The game was intense tonight and if you paid to watch our game you definitely got your money’s worth. It was a great game,” Hojem added.

    The Cardinals scored 21 points in the third quarter to lead 46-40 going into the final frame.

    Steven Rounsley scored 16 and Devante Harris added 13 for Tenino.

    Winlock (1-2) will host Tumwater tonight, while Tenino (2-2) plays at Onalaska on Monday.

    PE ELL — Onalaska’s Dustin Ritchey scored a career-high 24 points and the Loggers put away Pe Ell 57-40 here Thursday night in nonleague boys basketball action.

    The Loggers took an 8-point lead into the intermission, and outscored their hosts 18-6 in the third quarter to salt away the win.

    “We kept it pretty close, within striking distance, and then we came out of halftime again — it’s been bothering us all year — and only put up 6 points,” Pe Ell coach Dana Cox said. “Their press really bothered us again.”

    Derrick Capps led the Trojans with 10 points, while Andy Pickens grabbed a team-high eight rebounds.

    “He came in and played hard defensively,” Cox said of Pickens. “He worked really hard on the glass.”

    Johnny Krause scored 10 points for Onalaska, and Travis McMillion grabbed nine rebounds.

    Capps and sophomore Austin Arrington both played well for Pe Ell, Cox added.

    Onalaska (2-2) will host Mossyrock on Saturday, and Pe Ell (0-4) begins Central 2B League play at Napavine on Wednesday.
