1B/2B Hoops: Oakville Nabs Big Win Over North River

Posted

Ashton Boyd scored 19 points and led the defensive effort as the Oakville Acorns held off the North River Mustangs, 41-28, at home Saturday night in a 1B Coastal League boys basketball game.

Oakville coach Kyle Burkhardt knew Saturday’s contest would be a challenge. North River features a 6-foot-5 junior forward named Kainoa Kanahele, who had 27 points in North River’s 70-50 win over Taholah earlier in the week.

So Burkhardt planned to send a double team Kanahele’s way whenever possible, with Boyd shouldering most of the responsibility. Kanahele was a non-factor, scoring just nine points. That was the difference.

“It was a defensive battle,” Burkhardt said. “We played physical.”

A season ago, North River pulled away for a 51-30 win after Oakville hung around for a time. But the script flipped, with Oakville pulling away.

The Acorns ripped off an 11-4 run to start the game before North River busted off its own 12-4 run to take its first lead of the game at 16-15 with a minute to go before the half.

Boyd then drained back-to-back 3-pointers, the second a buzzer beater to help the Acorns reclaim the momentum for good. Oakville connected on 6-of-17 shots from downtown on the night.

“It was a big game for us,” Burkhardt said. “Now it’s our turn. It was really big, especially for a young team.”

Freshman Eddie Klatush had 11 points, eight assists and six steals for the Acorns. Boyd added eight rebounds, four blocks, three steals and three assists.

Tyson Wilson chipped in four rebounds and three blocks and Courtney Price pulled down a team-high nine boards.

Oakville (3-1) visits the Chitwins of Taholah on Tuesday. Tip-off is set for 5:45 p.m.

Slow Start Topples Trojans

Pe Ell got off to a shaky start, surrendering a 23-5 opening quarter against Naselle, in a 64-41 loss to the Comets at home on Saturday.

Naselle sank seven 3-pointers in the first quarter, but Pe Ell battled back to go on a 19-10 run in the second quarter to trail 33-24 at the half.

But the battle-tested Comets, a team coming off a third-place finish at the 1B state tournament, held off the Trojans the rest of the way.

“They’re a strong team,” Pe Ell coach Clayburn Lusk said. “You could tell they placed third at state.”

The Trojans held Naselle standout Kolby Glenn to just 11 points.

Pe Ell was led by Joey McCalden’s 12 points, while Aaiden Lee added 11 and Wyatt Marrs scored 10.

Pe Ell (3-3) travels to Adna on Monday, the first of four-consecutive road games next week for the Trojans.

Pirates Win Fifth Straight

Adna ran its win streak to five games by holding off cross-county rival Willapa Valley, 62-54, in non-league action Saturday at home.

Chase Collins led all scorers with 16 points, while senior Tyler Minkoff added 15, Lane Johnson had nine, Eli Smith seven and Zach Berg and Aaron Aselton each tallied six.

“Aselton’s and Minkoff’s hustle plays were key,” Adna coach Luke Salme said. “We overcame a sluggish start and good shooting by (Willapa Valley), with some better intensity in the second half.”

The Pirates trailed by four after one quarter at 18-14, took the lead going into the half (30-29) and maintained a one-point lead after three quarters before outsourcing the Vikings 18-11 in the final frame.

Valley was led by senior post Beau Buchanan’s 14 points. Gavin Hampton added 12 for the Vikings and Tyler Adkins had 11.

The Pirates improve to 5-0 and host Pe Ell on Monday. Valley (4-2) lost its second straight after winning four in a row to start the season. The Vikings host Mossyrock on Tuesday.

Indians Improve to 5-1

Toledo ripped off a 12-2 in the first quarter and never looked back, bouncing Stevenson, 52-35, for its fourth-consecutive victory on the road Saturday in 2B Central League play.

Senior Carlo Arceo-Hansen finished with a game-high 11 points to go with six rebounds and two steals. Sophomore point guard Jake Cournyer added 10 points, three steals and a board.

Carson Olmstead scored eight points and hauled in six boards, while Thomas Glass had six rebounds and a steal and Fredy Fernandez had five boards and four points.

The Indians built a 34-12 lead at the half and glided to victory from there.

Stevenson was led by Kaan Bach’s 10 points.

Toledo improves to 5-1 overall and heads down state Route 6 Wednesday to Pacific County to take on Raymond in a non-league match.

Ducks’ Hot Shooting Downs Loggers

Toutle Lake busted off a 27-12 run in the first quarter, fueled by six 3-pointers, to stun Onalaska early and hand the Loggers a 71-56 defeat in Onalaska on Saturday.

“They hit every shot in the first quarter,” Onalaska coach Todd Dalsted said. “Then we played even the next three quarters. Our kids are always going to fight.”

Senior point guard Danny Dalsted led the Loggers with a team-high 26 points, while Mason Ulery scored 12 and Cole Taylor had 11.

Toutle Lake freshman Zack Swanson led all scorers with 36 points.

The outsized Loggers tied the total rebounds with the Ducks at 34-34, and haven’t lost a rebound battle in four games, Dalsted said.

“Our guys play hard every night,” Dalsted said. “Good things are going to happen.”

Onalaska (1-5) travels to Kalama (3-2) on Wednesday.
