2A Volleyball: Tigers Fall in Straight Sets to Shelton

Posted

Centralia struggled to generate offense early on and came away with a straight-set defeat (25-21, 25-14, 25-23) to Shelton in 2A Evergreen Conference action on the road Thursday night.

After having no non-league schedule to start the season, the Tigers were playing in just their second game of the year. Centralia coach Marti Smith said the team is still finding its footing against teams that are four or five games deep in the season already. She’s already seen an improvement from game one to game two.

“The second-set score is deceiving,” Smith said. “There were a lot of rallies going on, it’s just we ended up on the losing end of those rallies.”

The Tigers found themselves back on their heels the first set and couldn’t get their offense going quickly enough, she said. That finally changed between the second and third sets, but by then it was too late to mount a comeback.

Peyton Smith was perfect from the service line (13 for 13) and tallied a team-high 13 assists. Evie Rooklidge was also flawless serving (14 for 14) and added a team-high 33 digs.

Jadyn Hawley had 22 digs, Gracie Schofield chipped in 14 digs and Tatum Johnston finished with two blocks and three kills.

“I feel better about tonight,” Smith said. “It’s a good lead-in for the Tumwater game next week. We’ve got a good group, they adjust well and they’re good leaders. We know it’s a marathon, not a sprint. I believe in these kids.”

Centralia (0-2 overall, 0-2 league) hosts Tumwater on Tuesday.

Black Hills Sweeps Aberdeen

The Wolves just keep on rolling, after a big league win over Centralia earlier this week, Black Hills came back and swept Aberdeen (25-9, 25-9, 25-18) in a dominant display Thursday night.

Black Hills controlled the pace and momentum throughout most of the match, with senior Raeven Medwynter recording 10 digs, senior Olivia Hisaw hitting 10 kills and junior Alex Loveless earning five aces.

The Wolves (3-1, 2-0 EvCo) take on W.F. West next Tuesday at home.
