2A/1A Girls Hoops: Poor Offensive Showing Sinks Tigers

Posted

Makayla Chavez scored 11 points with five assists, but missed layups and free throws combined with a surprising switch to zone saw Shelton top Centralia 42-32 in a 2A Evergreen Conference girls basketball game on Friday in Centralia.

Centralia coach Doug Ashmore said that Shelton’s abrupt defensive change after the first quarter, which Centralia won 10-7, was something the Tigers had not seen on film, wasn’t a hindrance, necessarily, but was a surprise.

“We didn’t see it on film,” Ashmore said. “I kind of caught us off guard.”

The Tigers didn’t help themselves from the floor, missing an estimated six layups in the second quarter, and were just 8-of-24 shooting from the free throw line. That’s as many as 20 points left on the floor, which would have dramatically changed the outcome.

“We took great shots,” Ashmore said. “I loved every look we had. I love that we’re getting to the line, we just need to keep working on shooting and free throws. Our defense is keeping us in ball games. We just need to find a way to score.”

Centralia (0-3) travels to Mint City on Friday to take on rival W.F. West on Monday.

Bearcats Extend Win Streak to Four

Eight Bearcats got on the scoring board as W.F. West throttled Aberdeen, 57-23, on the road Friday to run its win streak to four games to start the season.

Junior Drea Brumfield drainied four 3-pointers for a game-high 18 points on a night she eclipsed 700 career points in 57 career games.

The Bearcats came out firing, scoring 23 points in the first quarter and 18 in the second to take a commanding 41-14 lead at the break.

“The first half, we did a good job pressing and containing their press,” W.F. West coach Kyle Karnofski said. “We didn’t give up anything easy and controlled the tempo with our press.”

Senior Madi Mencke added 12 points, Morgan Rogerson scored eight, Olivia Remund had seven and Mak Mencke finished with four.

Rounding out the Bearcats’ scoring was Maliyah Lockwood with three and Carlie Deskins and Kyla McCallum with two each.

“We were pretty exhausted and you could tell we had four-games-in-a-week legs,” Karnofski said. “To be able to go to the harbor and leave with a win, you’re always happy.”

W.F. West (4-0) hosts Twin-City rival Centralia in the Swamp Cup on Monday.

Warriors Take First Loss

Rochester couldn’t get its offense churning as the Warriors fell behind early and couldn’t catch up in a 46-30 loss to Black Hills Friday.

“We struggled offensively tonight,” Rochester coach Davina Serdahl said. “We could not make a shot. They were there, we just couldn’t hit them.”

Lauren Rotter led the Warriors with a team-high 13 points to go with six rebounds. Maddie Bates added six points and Sofie Sand had a team-high seven rebounds.

The Warriors take their first loss of the season, fall to 2-1 overall and host Aberdeen on Monday, part of three-straight home games for Rochester.

Press, Bench, Schow Propel Tenino Past Hoquiam

Ashley Schow scored 20 points, and Tenino got double figure contribution from Alivia Hunter as the Beavers used a debilitating press to handle the Hoquiam Grizzlies 56-25 at home in a 1A Evergreen Conference girls basketball game on Friday.

Hunter’s 10 points was a welcome sight for Tenino coach Scott Ashmore, who has been trying to elicit some scoring from someone not named Schow.

“Hunter stepped up big time,” Ashmore said, adding his other guards were creating space with aggressive dribble drives. “She shot really well.”

Tenino grabbed a convincing 18-0 lead after the first quarter, its press causing problems for the visiting Grizzlies.

“Our defense was solid,” Ashmore said. “We pressed the first half and made ‘em play fast, and it carried us the whole first half.”

Tenino (4-1) visits Montesano on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
