Posted

The Toledo Indians whacked 27 total hits and scored eight runs in two innings in a 14-1 and 19-0 doubleheader sweep of Winlock in the Battle of the Cowlitz on Saturday in Winlock.

Jesse Towns lashed three hits and scored three runs to lead the Indians offense in the opener.

Geoffrey Glass homered, driving in two and scored twice, as well. Brannon Guyer doubled twice, drove in a run and scored a pair. Conor Gilreath also doubled twice, scored two and drove in one. Mason Miller added two hits, as many RBI and as many runs.

Ryan Bloomstrom was nearly untouchable on the mound, turning in 5 innings with one hit, one unearned run with 11 strikeouts against just one walk.

Mekhi Morlin had Winlock’s lone hit.

In the nightcap, Kaven Winters was 4-for-5 with two RBI and two runs. Rogan Stanley had two hits with three RBI and scored twice. Carson Gould added two hits with three RBI and three runs.

Rayder Stemkoski scored four times with a pair of RBI. Guyer also doubled and drove in two.

Glass had two hits, two RBI and scored a run.

Carson Olmstead and Aiden Umbriaco both tripled.

Caiden Schultz, in addition to notching a hit, RBI and two runs, struck out seven over 3.0 innings while allowing just two hits. Guyer tossed the final two innings, allowing no hits with five strikeouts.

Landon Tiemens and Morpin both singled for Winlock in the loss.

“We finally got the bats going today,” Toledo coach Bill Waag said. “That was good today. Not only the hits, but we hit it hard.”

The Indians face the vaunted Fighting Ducks of Toutle Lake on Monday, and have to throw strikes, play solid defense and hit the ball to have a chance.

“It’s gonna be up to the boys,” Waag said. “We have to play well in all those phases of the game to compete with (Toutle Lake). The boys are excited, but we’re gonna have to keep swinging it, throwing strikes and mixing up the pitches to keep the batters off balance and rely on the defense to make the routine plays.”

Toledo (4-5) hosts Toutle Lake on Monday at 4 p.m. Winlock (4-8) visits Rainier the same day, but at 3:30 p.m.

Ony Rolls on Senior Day

Buoyed by solid outings from Lathond Fistch and Jeremy Larson, the Onalaska Loggers cruised to a 14-4 Senior Day win over Morton/White Pass on Saturday.

Fitsch tossed 3.2 innings with no earned runs, and Larson came in behind to toss the final 2.2 with also no earned runs and three strikeouts.

Fitsch also notched three singles, a double, three RBI and three runs Mason Ulrey added three hits and as many RBI, and Ethan Cameron pitched in with a double and a pair of RBI. Danny Dalstead tripled with a single, as well.

It was the final home game for Spencer Hamilton, Cole Zandel and Dalstead.

“They’ve been a great asset to the program and will be missed,” Ony coach Rocky Stanley said.

Onalaska (3-6) is off until Thursday when it travels to Cathlamet to take on Wahkiakum at 4 p.m. Morton-White Pass (1-8) hosts Adna on Monday at 4 p.m.

Pirates Walk-Off Tigers

Adna freshman Nate Schueber scored on a passed ball in the bottom of the 11th inning and Adna escaped with an 11-10 win over Napavine at home on Saturday.

Adna improves to 7-1-1 with the victory and extends its win streak to five. Napavine’s loss snaps a six-game win streak as the Tigers fall to 6-2 overall.

Napavine rocketed out to an 8-2 lead in the top of the fourth before Adna reeled off four runs in the bottom of the fourth to pull within two.

The Tigers went up 10-7 heading into sixth before the Pirates came storming back with three runs in the bottom of the inning to tie it up and send the game into extra innings. Neither team scored from innings seven through the top of the 11th as the 80-plus-degree heat began to take a toll on both squads.

“We just chipped away,” Adna coach Jon Rooklidge said. “At that point, nobody could do anything. Missed opportunities by both teams. It was getting to the point of dehydration and the kids were tired.”

Schueber walked to lead off the bottom of the 11th for Adna. He stole second, reached third on a passed ball then sprinted home on another passed ball and scored the winning run on a close play at the plate that resulted in the ball popping out.

Ryan Wichert, Tyler Minkoff, Asa Ingle and Levi Gates combined for 11 strikeouts, with Gates getting eight of those and the win while allowing just one hit in five innings.

Minkoff and Gates each went 2-for-4 at the plate, with Gates driving in four runs. Schueber had an RBI double.

For Napavine, Scott Burdick fanned eight batters on the mound and Laythan Demarest struck out seven.

Gavin Parker was 3-for-4 at the plate with an RBI double and made an amazing catch in center field while crashing into the wall. Braiden Osborne was 2-for-3 with two RBIs, Ashton Demarest drove in a run and Keith Olson had a two-run double.

“It was really a good high school baseball game,” Rooklidge said. “It was intense. There was heartbreak. Kids on both sides played their tails off.”

Adna travels to Morton-White Pass on Monday. Napavine hosts Kalama on Monday.

Mountaineers Run Into Kalama Buzzsaw

The Rainier Mountaineers didn’t help themselves in a 23-6 road defeat at the hands of the talented and deep Kalama in a Central 2B League baseball game on Monday.

Jay Jeske and Mikey Green, who had a bases-clearing double, led the way offensively for the Mountaineers.

Rainier coach Mark Mounts acknowledged the competitiveness of his group, especially the younger portion of it. It was just that a series of defensive mistakes set them back too far.

“Our younger guys showed some fight,” Mounts said. “All season long, we’re digging a hole and not getting out of it.”

Rainier (3-4) hosts Winlock on Monday at 3:30 p.m.
