Mossyrock finally met its match in new 1B rival Naselle as the Vikings were handed their first loss of the season, a 23-22 defeat, and were trailing 20-9 in game two before sunlight ran out in a doubleheader Thursday in Pacific County.
The loss snapped a seven-game win streak, which included four shutouts and an average of 19 runs per game.
Mossyrock scored 22 runs on 16 hits and drew 15 walks, with Gracie May West going 2-for-2 with a double and four walks and Jolee Hadaller going 3-for-6 with a double.
West and Hadaller went back-and-forth in the circle as the Vikings tried switching it up every inning to try and throw the Comets off. They combined for seven walks.
Hailey Brooks was intentionally walked her first three at-bats before Naselle decided to test the hype of her hitting prowess in the fifth inning. They learned real quick as Brooks destroyed a ball to left field that cleared two fences and was lost in a swamp.
“It’s still out there in the swamp somewhere,” Mossyrock coach Keith Coleman said.
Brooks also hit a home run in her first at-bat in game two, then intentionally walked her final two at-bats. She finished the day 2-for-2 with two home runs and seven intentional walks.
Trista Rockwood was 3-for-5 with two doubles in game one, while Payton Torrey was 2-for-5 and Alexandra Rueda and Abby Loven each had two hits.
The Vikings (7-1) finish out the regular season with a non-league match at Morton-White Pass (3-8) at 4 p.m. in Randle on Friday. The two teams previously met on April 16, when the Vikings battled the Timberwolves to a 17-16 victory.
The 1B District IV Tournament is set for 10 a.m., Saturday, in Montesano.
Ava Simms tossed a no-hitter on Thursday as Adna rolled to a 16-0 win over Kalama in Central 2B League softball action on the Pirates’ home field.
Simms, an eighth-grader, struck out 12 without issuing a walk in the five-inning game. She struck out the first six batters of the game and carried a perfect game into the final inning, when with one out a runner reached on an infield error. Simms struck out the next two batters to end the game.
Brooklyn Loose homered for Adna and went 2 for 4 with four RBI. The Pirates scored 11 runs in the first inning to take control.
Gracie Beaulieu doubled and drove in three runs for Adna. Parker Feist, Macy Kalnoski and Ashlee Von Moos all hit doubles, while Sadie Burdick added a single and drove in two runs.
Adna (15-0) finished C2BL play with a league-best 12-0 record and enters the District 4 softball tournament on Tuesday.
Toledo took care of business Thursday, shutting out Stevenson, 17-0, in three innings to lock down the Central 2B League’s No. 8 seed at districts.
The Indians smacked 13 hits and scored 11 runs in the first inning, allowing coach Chad Williams to put in subs.
Bethany Bowen pitched all three innings, striking out four, walking one and allowing one hit.
The Indians improve to 10-1 overall and will host the winner of Napavine and Forks
It was about the most fitting way Onalaska’s two seniors could go out on senior night Thursday: with home runs.
Hailey Naillon and Abby Shelton each belted shots over the fence, Naillon’s a three-run shot, and Shelton’s a two-run blast, to help the Loggers to a 17-0 win over Wahkiakum in three innings.
“I’ve coached a long time and I’ve never got to walk off the field and say all my seniors hit a home run on senior night,” Onalaska coach Rich Teitzel said. “Shout out to my two seniors.”
The Loggers smacked an absurd 19 total hits to put up 10 runs in the first and seven in the second. Alex Cleveland-Barrera and Hannah James also hit home runs for Ony.
“The whole team hit well,” Teitzel said. “Wahkiakum was great to play. They were fun.”
Ace Dylan “Pickle” Zigler tossed an eight-strikeout no-hitter in the circle and was one walk away from a perfect game.
Onalaska improves to 7-3 overall and secures the Central 2B League’s No. 4 seed at the district tourney. The Loggers will host the winner of Morton-White Pass and Ilwaco at 4:30 p.m. on Monday in the opening round.
Winlock out-hit Napavine, 12-11, but the Tigers’ hits were more timely as Napavine beat Winlock, 17-14, on the road Thursday in C2BL action.
“It was kind of a wild game,” Winlock coach Lauren Dumoulin said.
Dani Tupuola went 3-for-4 with a three-run homer for Napavine, while Cailyn Milton was 2-for-4 with a home run and Ellie Gilbert was 2-for-5.
Milton went the distance in the circle for the Tigers, striking out eight and walking a season-high four batters.
For the Cards, Karlie Jones was 4-for-4 with a home run and five RBI. Tiana Bornstein went 2-for-4 with three RBI.
Jones went all seven innings in the circle, striking out seven while allowing 11 hits and walking 11.
Winlock drops to 5-8 overall and takes the C2BL’s No. 7 seed into districts. The Cards will travel to C2BL No. 2 seed Toutle Lake for a 4 p.m. game on Monday in a district opener.
Napavine improves to 6-5 and has the No. 6 seed at districts. The Tigers travel to Pacific 2B League’s No. 3 seed, Forks, for a 4 p.m. match on Monday in their district opener.
Toutle Lake scored 13 runs on 14 hits to hand Rainier a 13-3 loss in five innings on Thursday in Toutle.
The Mountaineers scattered just five hits on the day and struck out seven times.
Rainier pitcher Bailey Elwell struck out six batters in four innings. Toutle Lake’s Cortlyn McDaniel struck out seven to get the win.
Rainier falls to 6-3 overall and takes the No. 5 seed at the district tournament. The Mountaineers travel to Pacific 2B League’s No. 4 seed, Raymond (7-5), in the opening round at 4 p.m. on Monday.
