Acorns turn it up in fourth quarter to edge Hyaks

A little creativity went a long way to give the Oakville-North River football team its first win of the season on Friday night, edging by North Beach 34-24 at home.

Leading 28-24 late in the fourth quarter, the Acorns (1-1) called a halfback RPO with Daniel Rodas unleashing a 49-yard touchdown pass to Konor Burnett for the final dagger. Rodas finished with eight catches for 178 yards and two scores plus his lone passing TD.

The defense played a large part in preserving the victory. After Gio Rodas threw an interception, North Beach raced down the field aiming for a pick-six, but Lewis Koser registered the saving tackle. At the two-yard line and North Beach having first and goal, Dre Kluth and Ben Kimbrel notched sacks and Daniel Rodas had a PBU on fourth and goal.

Gio Rodas found his brother Daniel for a 17-yard score in the first, then took off for a 16-yard scramble in the second. Kluth registered 17 tackles, four of them for a loss, and two sacks. Oakville-North River will host Chief Leschi next week.
