Bearcats Blank Warriors on Sloppy Night

The W.F. West boys soccer team wrapped up the first portion of the season on a winning note, going into spring break with a 2-0 victory at Rochester.

“Sloppy field conditions made it hard to control the ball,” W.F. West coach Allen Anderson said. “But the guys still did a great job of applying pressure and creating chances.”

It took the Bearcats the better part of a half to figure out the Rochester defense in the wet and windy conditions, but they finally broke through in the 39th minute, on a long free kick from Cameron Kunz that skipped off the wet grass past the keeper.

The goal kept Rochester from going into halftime on even footing, chasing a goal despite having to keep numbers back to deal with W.F. West’s pressure. The Warriors managed a few chances of their own, but the only goal to come belonged to the visitors, with the Bearcats doubling their lead off an Israel Lopez-Cruz tally in the 48th.

Rochester coach Matt Ashton said that despite the final scoreline, he was pleased with his side’s play in the central areas, led by Anthony Garcia, and the back third.

“Our entire defensive line played hard tonight,” he said.

Rochester and W.F. West are both set to get over a week off and return to play April 11, the Warriors at Black Hills and the Bearcats at Shelton.
