Bearcats thrash Vikings in season opener

After a slow start last fall, the W.F. West football team wanted to get off to a quick start in 2024.

The Bearcats did just that on Friday, dominating North Kitsap, a 2A semifinalist last season, 40-7 in a statement road victory.

After a scoreless first quarter, the Bearcats took control in the second, as Gage Brumfield scored three touchdowns. He took two in with his legs, and he tossed the other to Carson White.

The offense continued to roll in the second half, as Brumfield found Grady Westlund and Ross Kelley on passing touchdowns two and three before Miles Martin punched in the final touchdown of the game from five yards out.

Brumfield finished the day 14 for 20 with 154 passing yards, 79 rushing yards, and five total touchdowns, while Beau Guyette added 86 yards from scrimmage.

White led the team with 51 receiving yards on three catches, while Westlund hauled in three passes for 30 yards and Kelley grabbed three for 26.

The defense was just as dominant, allowing just 129 total yards, including just 22 rushing yards on North Kitsap’s 26 attempts.

The Bearcats (1-0) will look to keep rolling next Friday at Capital.
