Beavers Stumped at the Net in Loss

TENINO — The Tenino boys soccer team’s rough stretch didn’t improve on a cold an ugly Friday in Stone City, as the Beavers fell 1-0 to Hoquiam despite dominating play for their fourth straight loss.

“We were the better team in the first half, and we killed them in the second half,” head coach Trevor Fetbrandt said. “That’s the story of our lives. We keep outplaying people, but we concede.”

Playing quite literally with a strong wind at their back down the stretch, the Beavers seemed to play to a field tilted their way, owning possession in the second half while chasing a goal. But while the rain drops flew into Hoquiam’s net, the ball just wouldn’t.

Tenino snapped off 11 shots, while Hoquiam didn’t test keeper Brock Maurer once after halftime. The Beavers pressed their way to chance after chance, winning 11 corner kicks, and even played the final 15 minutes up a man after a Grizzly picked up his second yellow card.

“Our big focus going into this particular game, based on the formation they run, we were really trying to focus on possession in the midfield and possession out wide on the wings,” Fetbrant said. “Those were the two places we thought we could dominate, and as the game went along, it became more and more apparent that we were able to execute that. But that final ball, we just couldn’t get a good, good look at the end.”

The weather played a huge part in the one goal the game did feature as well, with a wet ball slipping through Maurer’s wet gloves in the first half, giving the Grizzlies the deciding tally.

Maurer ended his night with four saves.

Tenino is scheduled to face Black Hills on the road Thursday.
