Beck’s big day leads Black Hills past Clover Park

Black Hills coach Tom Spray had high expectations for fourth-year quarterback Jaxsen Beck going into Week 1.

Beck lived up to the hype in a big way in Black Hills’ opener, as the senior threw for 335 yards and seven touchdowns in the Wolves’ 49-20 win over Clover Park.

“With his experience with his talent, he was not fooled at all tonight,” Spray said.

Tristan Deville was the biggest beneficiary of Beck’s tremendous outing, as the senior wideout hauled in five catches for a whopping 217 yards and three touchdowns. Jesse Keith hauled in a pair of touchdowns, Embry Washburn got free for a 48-yard score, and Tyson Creekpaum scored on a 42-yard TD.

“(Beck) was throwing the ball to open guys, and we were catching it and getting loose,” Spray said.

While the offense was putting up excellent numbers, the defense got better as the game went along.

After the T-Wolves scored 20 in the first half, they were shutout in the second.

“We came out and played more physical,” Spray said. “We tackled better in the second half.”

Jake Tinsley came down with an interception in the fourth, one that helped the Wolves bleed out the clock late.

The Wolves will have a short week next week when they look to go 2-0, as they’ll head to Eatonville on Thursday.
