Centralia deputy mayor announces resignation after moving

Centralia Deputy Mayor Cameron McGee announced his resignation in a City of Centralia news release, effective Wednesday, Sept. 11.

McGee had been serving on the council since being elected to represent District 1 in Centralia in 2017. He was sworn in at the beginning of 2018. He is resigning because he is moving outside of the district — although he is remaining within Centralia.

“I greatly appreciate the opportunity I had to serve our community over the last six years,” McGee said in the release. “I’m proud of the time I spent on council and will continue to stay engaged. I would like to thank everyone for their support and drive to move our community forward.”

During his time in office, he contributed to increasing Centralia’s housing supply and helped create the Hub City Greenways vision and foster economic development to help improve quality of life for Centralians, according to the release.

“I want to express my sincere gratitude to Deputy Mayor McGee for his tireless work and invaluable contributions to our city,” Centralia Mayor Kelly Smith Johnston said. “His dedication and vision have helped shape the future of Centralia, and he will be greatly missed. We wish him all the best in his new home and look forward to his continued leadership in our community outside of city council.”

McGee will be formally recognized during his final Centralia City Council meeting starting at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 10, at Centralia City Hall, located at 118 W. Maple St.

The Centralia City Council will begin the process of selecting a new District 1 representative and will keep the community informed of the process, the release added.

Following former Councilor Leah Daarud’s resignation in April 2023, the council opened up an application period for interested residents within Daarud’s district.

Once the application period ended, the Centralia City Council held an open public meeting — as required by state law — to conduct candidate interviews, make nominations and ultimately vote to select the new councilor.
