Letter to the Editor: Letter Author Ignores Facts on Crime, Poverty and Jan. 6

Posted

It appears that the “Facts Matter, But Apparently Not to Letter Writer” letter to the editor author needs to follow their own advice, as what was presented as “facts” may be completely so only in that writer’s mind. For instance: “There were no police officers killed at the Capitol on the day of Jan 6.”

No, but other people did die at the Capitol on that day, and five police officers died later as a result of the riot at the Capitol on that day. Is that just being picky? I think not.

“Democratic cities are in fact less safe.”

Crime is only one metric when considering what makes a citizen unsafe. Worldwide, larger cities with high density population will usually have higher crime rates because criminals are drawn to a place with abundant potential victims. Yet, a report on thirdway.org pointed out that Republican states have a problem with rising murder rates. Despite a media narrative to the contrary, this is a problem that afflicts Republican-run cities and states as much or more than the Democratic bastions.

In 2020, per capita murder rates were 40% higher in states won by Donald Trump than those won by Joe Biden. Eight of the 10 states with the highest murder rates in 2020 voted for the Republican presidential nominee in every election this century.

Poverty is a more encompassing metric of safety, as crime, hunger, poor education, teen pregnancy and many other threats to families and individuals are the product of poverty. Poverty rates are highest in Mississippi (19.58%), Louisiana (18.65%), New Mexico (18.55%), West Virginia (17.10%), Kentucky (16.61%)  and Arkansas (16.08%),. All but New Mexico are saddled with Republican governors. Those states are often subsidized by federal funds paid by taxpayers in blue states. For instance, the eight states receiving the highest child tax credit per capita were all Republican-voting.

“The FBI is attacking Republicans”

Really? The FBI is fulfilling its mission to investigate possible crimes against the people and government of the United States. It just seems that those under investigation are all members of the last presidential administration which was, coincidentally, Republican. It does not take much research to find that almost all of the fact witnesses are also Republican.

Really, it seems that Republicans are attacking Republicans. The FBI is merely providing the legally prescribed due process.

“Doing your research is a good idea before posting to make sure you believe you’ve accurately covered the facts, because in this case, the person saying people should do their research obviously did no such thing.”

On that we can agree.
