New Electric Vehicle Charging Stations Installed at Mellen Street e-Transit Station, With Opening Planned in June

They’re not ready quite yet, but Twin Transit announced Monday that it has installed a number of electric vehicle chargers at its Mellen Street e-Transit Station, which is set to open the first week of June.

New concrete was also poured early Tuesday morning, and the project is entering the final steps of building out this new station.

The project, described by Twin Transit as a “tremendous economic and environmental opportunity,” was announced last fall and will transform Centralia’s Mellen Street Park and Ride into a hub for electric charging of cars and buses.

The project is being funded primarily by a $1.9 million green transportation grant that was passed down from the state, said Joe Clark, Twin Transit’s executive director, and it is a partnership between the transit authority and the Washington state Department of Transportation.

The last couple pieces of the project that need to be finished include the station’s electrical systems and paving around the station’s new induction charging pads, which will wirelessly charge Twin Transit’s two new electric buses.

Local fire departments will also undergo training on how to respond to fire hazards in case they break out on an electric bus, Clark said.

“I would say, by the end of the month, we should have it just about complete,” he said.
