Senior Babe Ruth team Rural Baseball Inc. (RBI) and junior legion squad I-5 Toyota/Mountain Dew battled to split a doubleheader Saturday at W.F. West High School.

RBI’s Mickey Woodward registered six strikeouts and allowed just two hits and zero earned runs across five innings to help the Dirtbags come away with a 3-2 win in Game 1.

RBI’s Luke Roth pitches the final two innings in relief, striking out three while surrendering three hits and one earned run.

Daymon Gressett drove in a run and scored another while going 1 for 2 at the plate. Toledo’s Ryan Bloomstrom went 2 for 3, Austin Stout was 2 for 2 and Geoff Glass played standout defense in left field.

In Game 2, I-5 Toyota’s Evan Stadjuhar smashed a walk-off single down the right field line in the bottom of the 7th inning to score Hunter Niemi from second base and give them an 8-7 victory over RBI.

I-5 Toyota’s Hunter Lutman shut down the Dirtbags in two dominant innings of relief, striking out four batters in the final two frames.

I-5 Toyota assistant coach Marc Roberts praised the team for their performance against a much-older Rural Baseball squad.

“We don’t have a single 18-year-old on our team,” Roberts said. “We’re a bunch of young guys.”

Jake Comer led the Dirtbags with a 2-for-3 performance at the plate, scoring two runs and knocking in another. Bloomstrom batted well again, going 2 for 4 with two RBI.

On the mound, Woodward took the loss, striking out two and allowing one run on one hit in one inning of work.

Stout tossed 1.1 innings, striking out three and walking four while allowing one hit and two earned runs. R.J Workman tossed 1.2 innings, striking out one batter and surrendering one earned run on a hit and a walk.

Rural Baseball gets back into action against Fort Vancouver at 5 p.m. on Tuesday.

I-5 Toyota/Mountain Dew is heading to the Junior Legion State Championships in Spokane on Sunday, July 25.
