Led by a ferocious defense and three players in double figures, the Tumwater girls basketball team got its second straight win to start the season in a 53-33 demolition of Washougal Friday night.
The Thunderbirds got 15 points from Kylie Waltermeyer, and 10 from Kendall Gjurasic, and a stat-stuffer from Regan Brewer, who finished just a steal shy of a triple-double with 12 points, 10 rebounds, and nine steals.
Brewer led the effort on defense, keeping the Panthers from getting into any kind of offense at all, holding them to single-digit scoring in three of four quarters Friday night.
“Proud of how the girls responded tonight,” T-Birds coach Nathan Buchheit said. “We came across some adversity and responded well. Good learning experience tonight for the girls.”
The Panthers made a late run in the third quarter, bringing the lead down just nine, but another flurry from the T-Birds and a reinvigorated defense kept them in check for the win.
The Thunderbirds take on North Thurston next on Monday on the road.
