A Vancouver Democrat has announced he is running for Congress.

David McDevitt issued a press release Monday about his candidacy for Washington’s 3rd Congressional District, which is currently represented by Republican Jaime Herrera Beutler.

“The middle class needs help; I am prepared to work hard in Congress for them,” he said in a press release.

Veterans issues are important to McDevitt, who served in the U.S. Army until he was honorably discharged in 1978; he continued in the reserves until 1981.

“Being a veteran, my focus will be to use my experience to ensure the VA gives quality health care, shorter wait times and jobs to those veterans that have sacrificed for our freedoms,” he said.

The press release also states he would strive work on family leave, equal pay and healthcare issues if elected.

McDevitt is concerned about young adults and the high cost of secondary education as well as expenses for senior citizens.

"We have to acknowledge and care for our country’s aging population,” he said. “I know, first hand, their concerns because my 83-year-old mother lives with me. The cost of living continues to increase without any substantive change in their social security benefits. In fact, Medicare and pharmacy costs continue to rise. They need our help."

McDevitt holds a bachelor’s degree in business information systems and market and a master’s degree in finance and management

He took the bar exam in California, the state he was born in, in 2012 and passed, but has not practiced law.

The candidate is involved with the Clark County Democratic Central Committee and serves as a commissioner on the Clark County Clean Water Commission.
