Centralia College TRiO Programs held its annual celebration March 24 for participants and their families. Held in the Michael Smith Gymnasium on the college campus, the theme was TRiO College Carnival, and was attended by a large crowd who enjoyed pizza, cotton candy and popcorn. There were also a variety of games for different age groups to play.
Several student clubs attended the event in an effort to show participants the wide variety of opportunities throughout the college. They included the TRiO, Robotics, Medical Assistants, Gender & Sexuality Alliance, and Speech clubs.
“It was a great crowd and we are so happy the student clubs attended,” said program specialist Caytee Cline. “They show that the college and our students really are here to help anyone succeed in achieving their educational goals.”
As a service component, an important part of the TRiO Program’s core message, attendees were asked to bring a canned food item to donate to local food banks. The donation automatically entered them in a drawing for either a $100 scholarship or one of two $50 gift certificates to the Centralia College bookstore, all donated by the Centralia College Foundation.
TRiO is a federally funded program to help identify and support first generation, low income and disabled students to achieve a college education. TRiO offers three programs: TRiO TS, which serves middle and high school students; Upward Bound, which serves high school students; and Student Support Services, which supports students during their time at Centralia College.
