A woman walking near the Jackson Visitor Center at Paradise on Mount Rainier had to be rescued after falling into a sinkhole in the snow.

A visitor called for help at 6:15 p.m. on Friday night. Rangers found the woman in a large cavern created by heat from an electrical transformer buried under 20 feet of snow.

The woman walking on the surface had broken through the ceiling of this cavern and fallen at least 10 feet onto the hard surface of the transformer, and from there onto the ground.

She suffered “multiple traumatic injuries” the National Park Service reported.

The woman was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle at 7:53 p.m. No information was available on her status.
