From The Chronicle archives: “Fancy hotel has unusually short life: One of Centralia’s first and finest hotels had an unusualy short life. The Park Hotel opened Jan. 18, 1890, at the corner of North Tower Avenue and Fifth Street. The hotel burned down six years later. The four-story structure was built in 1889 for $13,000. It was given its name for its location — across the street for an early park in the north end of the city. Capt. M. Robinson managed the Park Hotel, which featured accommodations for 100 guests and boasted about electric lights, hot baths and a billiard room. But the lustrous hotel was reduced to ashes March 3, 1896. In a way, it was its gradeur that brought it down. The fire apparently started in the uppermost part, an area under the fourth story roof called the garrett. The fire department was unable to reach the flames and the fire ripped through the wooden structure. Though it was insured for $4,900, only $380 of the claim was paid. Because of that, and with the shift of the business district of Centralia south to its present location and the advent of a depression, the Park Hotel was never rebuilt.
