1B Hoops: Hot Start Helps Mossyrock Past Pe Ell

The Vikings jumped out to a 17-8 lead in the first quarter and held off Pe Ell, 64-55, on Thursday in 1B Coastal League boys hoops action in Pe Ell.

Gunner Mulligan led Mossyrock with 29 points and Keegan Kolb added 18.

“We got off to a rough start,” Pe Ell coach Clayburn Lusk said. “We’re just not coming out ready and turning the ball over too much.”

The Vikings also had an advantage at the foul line, going 17 of 26. The Trojans, meanwhile, were 1 of 7 from the stripe.

Joey McCalden led Pe Ell with 24 points. Jackson Lusk added nine and Wyatt Marrs tallied eight on 4-of-4 shooting.

“I thought Wyatt did an outstanding job,” Lusk said of his power forward. 

Aaiden Lee chipped in with seven rebounds for Pe Ell (3-3), which hosts Naselle in a boys-girls doubleheader on Saturday. Mossyrock (4-2) plays at Columbia Adventist on Monday.



Acorns Win Second Straight

Oakville used big performances from its underclassmen to smash Lake Quinault for a 61-40 road win Thursday.

Freshman Eddie Klatush scored a game-high 19 points to go with eight assists, four rebounds and three steals. Freshman post Courtney Price also had an outstanding game, tallying 14 points, seven rebounds and two assists.

Sophomore post Ashton Boyd led the Acorns with a game-high 14 rebounds to go with 10 points, three assists, two blocks and two steals.

“Overall, I thought we played pretty well,” Oakville coach Kyle Burkhardt said. “We moved the ball well and the kids played hard. We were able to work on some stuff. It was a good tuneup game for North River.”

Oakville (2-1) hosts North River at 5:45 p.m on Saturday.
