1B Volleyball: Trojans Come Out Firing First Match

It was about the best start to the season Pe Ell coach Hollie Briggs could ask for.

The Trojans made the long trip to Longview and hammered Three Rivers Christian for a season-opening sweep (25-23, 27-25, 25-22) on Tuesday night.

“The girls had great energy and came out ready,” Briggs said.  “We did well from the get-go.”

Moving from a 4-2 rotation last season to a 5-1 this year, the Trojans’ main setter was out against the Eagles so one of last year’s setters, Ava Bush stepped up and showed out.

Taylor Briggs was pivotal for the Trojans, serving 19 for 20 and put the ball exactly where the coach wanted it.

Payton Peterson was commended by Holly Briggs for her hustle, precision passing and defense from the back row. Allie Engle led the Trojans with 10 kills and one block while playing excellent at the net.

“We had a lot of long rallies and great coverage,” Briggs said. “Proud of them. We’re a small team and only had one sub with eight players.”

Pe Ell (1-0) hosts Mary M. Knight at 6 p.m. Wednesday.
