21 Locals Advance to State at 1B Quad-District Meet

Competing with the best from four districts across the state, the Mossyrock and Pe Ell girls and boys track and field teams qualified a combined 21 athletes for the 1B state championships in Yakima next week. 

With athletes from Districts 1, 2, 3, and 4, Mossyrock won three individual quad-district titles, and will send 15 athletes to state, while the Trojans will send six. 

The Vikings were led by William Cushman, who qualified for all four events he ran in, on the boys side, finishing fourth in the 100 meters (11.91), ninth in the 200 meters (25.16), and running in both state-qualifying 4x100-meter and 4x400-meter relays. 

Matt Cooper was a triple-qualifier, finishing second in the 800 meters in 2:05.87 and also running in both qualifying relays. Christian Paz Tapia finished third in the 800m to qualify in 2:10.34, and second in the 1600m in 4:46.98 to move on to state, while also running in the Mossy 4x400. 

Hugo Wedam finished fourth in the 1600m in 4:58.70, and sixth in the 3200m (11:09.56) to move on in both events, and Miguel Gomez took home a quad-district title with a 10:33.01 win in the 3200m. 

The Mossy boys’ 4x100-meter relay team of Sage Greisen, Cooper, Ben Cruz, and Cushman finished second in 46.40 to move on, and the 4x400-meter relay of Paz Tapia, Lucas Cooper, Matt Cooper, and Cushman finished fourth in 3:47.80. 

Marshall Brockway was the last Viking boy to advance to state, finishing first in the shot put with a 42 foot, 11.5 inch toss, and seventh in the javelin (133 feet, 10 inches). 

For the girls, Caelyn Marshall took a quad-district title in the javelin with a season-best 119 foot, 5 inch heave, and also ran in the Viks’ state-qualifying 4x100-meter relay team. That group, which also includes Leah Contreras, Renzy Marshall, and Paige Houghtelling, finished fourth in 53.97. 

The last state qualifier for the Vikings was the 4x200-meter relay, which included Bailey Gross, Contreras, Renzy Marshall, and Saydi Mendoza, finishing fifth in 1:56.71. 



The Trojans, meanwhile, will send six athletes over nine events to Yakima. 

For the girls, Charlie Carper was the lone Trojan girl to advance to state, but made the most of her chance and qualified in all four events she ran. 

The senior finished seventh in the 100m (13.58), second in the 100m hurdles (17.11), fourth in the 300m hurdles (52.11), and fifth in the long jump (14 feet, 5 inches). 

For the boys, Carter Phelps qualified in three events, finishing second in both the 110m hurdles (15.85) and 300m hurdles (42.82), and helped the boys 4x400-meter relay as the second leg. 

Calan McCarty qualified by finishing seventh in the 110m hurdles (17.69), and was also on the 4x400-meter relay as the anchor. 

Owen Little was the last individual qualifier, finishing fourth in the shot put with a 39 foot, 6.5 inch throw. 

Along with McCarty and Phelps, Jakob Hayes and Wyatt Kissner helped the 4x400 team finish seventh in 3:52.34 to move on to state next week. 

The 1B State Championships will start next Thursday in Yakima.
