Kamy Dacus struck out 13 of the 15 batters she faced while allowing one hit and no walks as W.F. West shutout Shelton, 13-0, in five innings during the 2A Evergreen Conference Softball Tournament at Recreation Park Tuesday.
The undefeated and top-seeded Bearcats ran their win streak to 14 games (14-0) with the victory and now advance to the district tournament on Thursday at Recreation Park.
Sophomore third baseman Savannah Hawkins crushed a grand slam to finish 2-for-4 with five RBI.
Dacus smashed a homer while going 2-for-3 with four RBI, while sophomore second baseman Brielle Etter was 2-for-3 and scored a game-high four runs.
Sophomore shortstop Saige Brindle was 2-for-3 with an RBI and senior center fielder Alisha Anderson was 1-for-3 with an RBI.
“It was a good day,” W.F. West coach Caty Lieseke said. “We talk a lot about where we are each inning, and to score three runs in the first and two in the second is the tone we want to set.”
The Bearcats get back to action at 4 p.m., Thursday, when they face Columbia River at Recreation Park. Win or lose, they play at 6 p.m.
The Rochester Warriors have been through alot in the 2021 softball season. A pandemic. A new coach with new expectations.
Through it all, the Warriors will advance to the final four of the District 4 softball tournament with a 14-0 win over Black Hills and a wild, exciting 6-5 walk-off win over Tumwater in Chehalis.
“It has been hard on these seniors, I will say,” Rochester coach Tiffany Garcia said. “Coming in with a different frame of mind, you’re seeing a new culture shift with everything that’s going on. That’s hard.”
The nightcap win over Tumwater was an absolute doozy.
Starting the bottom of the seventh tied at five, Maddie Bates doubled with one out, moved to third on a Liz Phelps sac fly, then scored when Kiyah Kennedy dropped in a bloop single into the triangle of death behind third base. Rochester’s dugout exploded.
“We knew instantly when she hit that ball it was gonna find grass,” Garcia said.
Kaylei Clark had three walks and a single in the win, Lakota Escott had two singles and two RBI, Staysha Fluetsch doubled and singled and Sadie Knutson checked in with a single.
In the opener, it was far less dramatic.
Escott spun a one-hitter with seven punchouts as Rochester cruised.
Fluetsch had two hits, one a double, with an RBI, Emma Wiss doubled home a run, RaeLyne Berry drove in a run, as well. Jessa Lenzi drove in a pair of runs on two singles, and Kennedy and Clark each had a single and two walks.
Rochester will play Ridgefield on Thursday.
Mikayla Chavez had two hits, one a home run, with two runs and three RBI, but it wasn’t enough as the Tumwater Thunderbirds eliminated the Centralia Tigers 20-9 in a 2A District softball game in Chehalis on Tuesday.
Ella Orr also homered for the Tigers, part of a two-hit day with the one run and two RBI.
Liliana Babka drove in two runs with a double, and Liza Hubbard plated one with a two-bagger, as well.
Lauren Wasson doubled and scored a run for the Tigers, and Jadyn Hawley and Courtney Spriggs each scored two runs in the loss. Chloe Eng allowed 11 runs on 11 hits in relief, but only three were earned.
Centralia finishes the season 3-11.
