2A Track and Field: Bearcats Show Out at Three-Way Meet

The W.F. West Bearcats dominated the field events in a three-way meet against Black Hills and Shelton on Thursday, getting big performances from Mathew Senderak and Kyla McCallum.

Senderak cleared 9 feet, 6 inches, a season best. Zoey Robertson and Lydia Koenig, both freshmen, each cleared 6-06, which are personal bests. Junior Anne Van Der Pluijm also cleared 6-06 for the Bearcats.

In the javelin, McCallum launched a toss of 111-06, a personal best, to easily claim top honors over teammate Chloe Herron, who checked in at 89-07. 

On the boys side, Seth Hoff’s 163-06 toss was best, nearly 20 feet farther than teammate Darren Gray’s 146-10. Both were PRs. Hoff also won the highjump, clearing 5-10, and the long jump, checking in at 19-01.

Elaina Koenig set a personal best in the long jump, leaping 14-02, two inches farther than senior teammate Gracie Ericson, who finished third.

Elsewhere, Charles Mallonee won the 400 meter run in a wind-aided 56.83 seconds. All running times were wind-aided. 

Connor Russell won the 110-meter hurdles in 15.43, a season best. Russell also took the 300m hurdles, finishing in 43.84, nearly seven seconds faster than freshman teammate Mason Dowling.

Mallonee, along with Hoff, Gray and Ryan Hirte, took the 4x100 relay in 46.94, then Russell, Andrew Scheer, Clayton Jewel and Mallonee won the 4x400 relay in 3:52.44.



Amelia Etue took the 100-meter dash on the girls side with a time of 14.09, edging teammate Elizabeth Patana by about a half second. Etue’s time was a personal best and Patana’s was a season best.

WFW swept the top three spots in the 200 meters, getting a time of 30.49 from sophomore Brenna Witchey, a 31.24 from Van Der Pluijm, and a 31.44 from Patana, a season best.

Elaina Koenig finished the 800 in a season-best 2:37.85, then finished third in the 1600 in a personal-best 5:57.58.

Freshman Jaelynn Viall won the 3200, finishing in 15:57.06, a personal best, and two seconds faster than teammate Jocelyn Robertson (15:59.69). Senior Kelly robertson set a season record in the 300 hurdles, clocking a time of 51.12.

Ericson, Etue, Robertson and Patana combined for a 4x100 time of 55.57, the fastest of the day. Later, Witchey, Van Der Pluijm, Etue and Robertson won the 4x200 relay in 1:57.84, then Lydia and Elaina Koenig, Etue and Robertson claimed the 4x400 relay in 4:38.25.

Brianna Powe set a season record with a shot put tos of 95-04, 12 feet farther than freshman Sara Jane’s Lawson’s personal best of 83-06.

Sweeping the pole vault on the boys and girls side with senior Mathew Senderak leading the charge,” Bearcats coach Autumn Ledgerwood said. “It was great to see Mathew’s debut go well with nice attempts at 11 feet.”

W.F. West hosts a three-way meet with Centralia and Shelton next Thursday. First event is scheduled for 4 p.m.
