With a frigid cold and a strong headwind on the final 100-meter stretch to the finish line, Rochester boys and girls were unable to keep up with a strong Tumwater team at home on Wednesday. The boys lost 93-30 to the Thunderbirds while the girls fell 100-26.

“Marks were not great all the way around,” Rochester coach Troy Holman said. “But the kids get to compete, so that’s the cool part.”

Boys winners for the Warriors included junior Jaden Martenson, who captured the 110-meter high hurdles in 19.69 and the 300-meter hurdles in 50.16. Senior Caelen Christensen won the discus by eight feet with a toss of 97-8.

Girls winners were sophomore Savanna Riordan, who won the 100-meter dash by 1.2 seconds with a time of 14.58, while sophomore Kya Ubias won the 100-meter hurdles by more than a second with a time of 21.05.

Boys

Rochester junior Talon Betts set a PR in the 200-meter dash with a time of 23.96. He was third in the 100-meter dash in a time of 11.92. To get an idea of the level of headwind runners faced, Betts ran an 11.19 100-meter dash just a week ago in Chehalis.

“He’s a fun kid to coach,” Holman said. “He tries to do whatever you tell him to do.”

Freshman Chaos Tanori took second in the 400-meter dash with a PR of 1:04.54. Junior William Morton finished third in the 800-meter run (2:25.24) and sophomore Hunter Morgan was third in the 1600-meter run (5:13.83).

The Warriors’ 4x400-meter relay of Talon Betts, Hayden Dahl, Jaden Martenson and Chaos Tanori placed second in a time of 48.44.

In the shot put, senior Caelan Christensen was second with a toss of 36-11, while senior Hayden Dahl came in third with a PR of 34-9. Senior Nick Forseyth was second in the triple jump with a season-best of 34-2.

Girls

Junior Hannah Rodeheaver put in an all-around performance with three second-place finishes, including the shot put with a PR of 30-5.75, the discus (64-8) and the javelin (70-5).

Freshman teammate Emma Phillips was third in the shot put (43-6). Freshman Julie Edwards came in third in the 100-meter dash with a time of 17.03 and third in the long jump (10-7.5). Riordan was third in the 200-meter dash (30.59) and Ubias placed second in the long jump (11-11).

The Warriors get back in action on Wednesday when they join Centralia and Black Hills for a meet at Tumwater.
