2B Boys Hoops: Cardinals Survive Late Surge by Castle Rock

Posted

The Cardinals picked up a non-league victory Thursday night at home, topping 1A Castle Rock 50-40.

Joe Welch led the Cardinals with 19 points, and senior Abraham Mohsin added 17.

“Abraham kills it during open gym and tonight he was hooping,” Winlock coach Nick Bamer said. “It was awesome. He carried us. He was juking people out of their shoes.”

The Cardinals ran out to a 16-6 lead and led 24-17 by halftime before the Rockets came roaring back and pulled within three in the fourth quarter.

That’s when Mohsin took over and put the Cards on his back, while Welch hit two free throws down the stretch to ice the game.

“We were so much better, defensively,” Bamer said. “It was night and day.”

Winlock shot 39% (16 of 41) from the field in the win. Landon Tiemens added eight points for the Cards.

Bamer praised Ecuario Contreras and Lincoln Ruiz for their contributions off the bench.

“They were flying around, disrupting things and active on defense,” Bamer said.

Adam Patridge led the Rockets with 14 points. Lane Patridge added 12.

Winlock (3-6, 2-5 league) travels to Toutle Lake on Friday.
