2B Football: Loggers Chop Pirates to Stay Undefeated

TRIPLE OPTION: Onalaska Ran for 416 Yards in a 44-0 Road Shutout Over Adna

Posted

Onalaska utilized its patented triple-option attack to produce three 100-yard rushers and run for 416 total yards in a 44-0 thumping of Adna on the road Friday.

The Loggers win their fourth straight and remain unbeaten with a perfect 4-0 record on the season. Adna loses its third straight and drops to 0-3 on the year.

The Pirates switched to a wishbone offense for the first time since fall 2015, Onalaska coach Mazen Saade said, but the Loggers’ triple-option attack was too powerful to slow down. Onalaska finished with 416 rushing and total yards on the day, while holding Adna to -2 total yards.

The Pirates were able to run only 28 offensive plays and four of those were turnovers, including one on their own 5-yard line after a fourth-down goal-line stop.

"I was really proud of how hard we played," Adna coach K.C. Johnson said. "We never gave up and the effort was incredible. We're playing a ton of young guys and, unfortunately, theyr'e having to learn the last two weeks against two of the top three teams in the state."

Marshall Haight, Gunnar Talley and Kolby Mozingo led the Loggers’ three-pronged rushing attack, with Haight running 30 times for 134 yards and a score, Talley racking up 13 carries for 116 yards and a TD and Moingo adding 12 rushes for 107 yards and two TDs.

“All three of them ran really hard tonight,” Saade said. “I was really impressed with our blocking. I’m proud of how our guys played. Adna has a history of being a really good program.”

Saade credited defensive coordinator Wayne Nelson with drawing up a  gameplan to deal with Adna’s new-look on offense.

“Heck of a plan by him tonight,” Saade said. “He did a great job preparing our defense.”

Onalaska hosts Kalama (2-1) in a battle of powerhouses on Friday. Adna travels to Toledo (2-2) on Friday.

Tigers Win Third Straight

Senior quarterback Laythan Demarest ran 26 times for 256 yards and two touchdowns, while passing for another, as Napavine won its third straight in a 34-19 road win over a formidable Forks team Friday.

It was a rocky start for the Tigers, who made a multiple-hour road trip up the Olympic Peninsula to face the Spartans. Forks took the opening kickoff down to the 2-yard line before punching it in with workhorse running back Hayden Baker to make it 6-0 just a minute into the game.

Demarest answered with a 75-yard touchdown run to put the Tigers back on top. But Forks punched right back with another score, retaking the lead at 13-7. Napavine then reeled off 20 unanswered points to recapture the lead for good.

“It was a game all the way down to the end,” Napavine coach Josh Fay said. “There was a pretty good stretch where we were in control. A couple balls we should have picked off but we held on. To come away with a 15-point win is a good day.”

The Tigers exploded for 515 total yards while allowing just 206 to Forks. That included 457 rushing yards for Napavine to just 95 for the Spartans.

Demarest finished 2-for-4 passing for 58 yards and a score. Gavin Parker ran 19 times for 135 yards and a TD, while Lucas Dahl had three carries for 39 yards and Tanner Low added nine carries for 45 yards and a TD. Cade Evander caught two balls for 50 yards and a TD.

Napavine (3-1) hosts Wahkiakum on Friday.

Mountaineers Scale Titans

Rainier quarterback Mike Green threw for 270 yards and four touchdowns and the Mountaineers took a 32-7 win over Pe Ell-Willapa Valley Friday night in Pe Ell.

Rainier (2-2) got back on track after losing to Napavine last weekend while PWV (0-3) lost its third straight. The Titans, racked with injuries, started multiple kids who were playing their first-ever varsity snaps.

“We hung with them for a little while,” PWV coach Josh Fluke said. “I’m happy the way we played. Rainier had a couple big passes… but this group of kids are fighters.”

Derek Fluke scored the Titans’ lone goal, a 3-yard touchdown run with 6:17 left in the game. Fluke finished with 10 carries for 44 yards. Wil Clements had a team-high 55 yards rushing on 14 carries, and Blake Howard added 15 carries for 43 yards.

Rainier wideout Sean Mahaffey had a game-high 154 yards receiving and three touchdowns on four catches, while Ethan Gonzalez tallied 48 yards rushing and one TD.

PWV travels to North Beach on Friday to play a game of 8-man football. Rainier plays Forks at 2 p.m., Saturday, in Tenino.

Chinooks Race Past Indians

Toledo tacked on three second-half scores but it wasn’t enough to keep up with an explosive Kalama team in a 42-20 road defeat Friday.

Davin Kinsman ran 20 times for 154 yards and one touchdown, and Carlo Arceo-Hansen ran seven times for 147 yards and two scores to lead the Indians. Toledo finished with 315 total yards of offense.

Toledo (2-2) fell for the second straight week after losing to Onalaska last weekend in Montesano. The Indians fumbled the exchange from center to quarterback four times Friday against Kalama, including three times while driving downfield on fourth down.

“Overall, our guys played well defensively,” Toledo coach Mike Christensen said. “We made them work for their scores. We had what I would call two defensive breakdowns where they had long passed, but I’m proud of the way we played them.”

Toledo will look to get back on track when it hosts Adna (0-3) next Friday. The Pirates lost to Onalaska 44-0 on Friday.

Timberwolves Thrash Toutle Lake

Morton-White Pass won the battle of the mud pit, taking down Toutle Lake 32-14 on the road in terrible, muddy conditions.

Kysen Collette led the Timberwolves with 114 yards and two touchdowns on just seven carries. Sophomore running back Carter Dantinne added 67 yards rushing and ran in two 2-point conversions. MWP suited up just 17 kids for the game and has been alternating between 8-man and 11-man football every other week.

“It’s tough to get consistency switching every week,” MWP coach Lee Metcalf said. “We’re moving in the right direction and were able to grind out a win. We’re just trying to fight.”

MWP moves to 3-1 on the season and travels to Stevenson on Friday.
