2B Girls Soccer: Tigers Shutout Cardinals, 7-0

Napavine senior Natalya Marcial and freshman Haley Gallagher each recorded a brace as Napavine handed Winlock a 7-0 defeat Wednesday night in Winlock.

Makensee Taliaferro Bouge scored in the first 25 seconds off an assist by Gallagher and the Tigers were off to the races.

Winlock fixed its defense and held Napavine scoreless for the next 11 minutes before Marcial notched her first goal in the 12th minute, followed by her second goal in the 20th minute, both unassisted. Gallagher knocked in her first goal in the 37th minute to give the Tigers a 4-0 lead at the half.

Gallagher notched her brace in the 43rd minute off a throw-in from Maya Kunkel to make it 5-0. Abbigail Marcial scored in the 59th minute from an assist by Ellie Gilbert, then Gilbert scored one of her own in the 62nd minute off an assist by Hayden Kaut to close out the scoring.

“When you’re faster than your opponent and can score downhill, you kind of fall in love with it,” Napavine assistant coach Chris Tarabochia said. “With a quality opponent, it’s not gonna be there. We talked about embracing a different approach and needing to play a full, level game, not just downhill. We did much better with that tonight.”

Napavine (2-0) travels to Class 1A Elma for a 7 p.m. match on Thursday.

Loggers Lash Spartans

Brooklyn Sandridge erupted for four goals as Onalaska hammered visiting Forks for an 8-0 home-opening win on Wednesday.

Cece Russ added one goal and one assist for the Loggers, while Kaiyah Sandridge scored a goal, Dylan Zigler notched a goal and Callie Lawrence tallied one goal and four assists.

Onalaska (1-1) travels to Adna for a 6 p.m. matchup on Monday.

Pirates Edged by Chinooks

Adna outshot Kalama 16-2 but the Chinooks were ultra efficient, scoring goals on both their shots to take a 2-1 victory over the Pirates in Kalama on Wednesday in non-league play.

“Super great efficiency,” Adna coach Horst Malunat said. “In any sport, that’s pretty dang good.”

Kalama scored in the 25th minute to take a 1-0 advantage at the half, then scored again in the 45th minute to go up 2-0.

Adna’s Presley Smith knocked in a goal in the 70th minute on a direct kick from 20 yards out, but the Pirates were unable to connect on their barrage of shots to tie it up before the end of regulation.

“Could we have won? Absolutely,” Malunat said. “We’re not giving up a lot of shots, we just have to be more efficient in scoring. Couldn’t quite finish in the end.”

It was the same issue that plagued the Pirates in a 1-0 defeat to Castle Rock last week, where Adna outshot Rockets 15-1.

A lot of it has to do, Malunat said, with playing quality opponents in these non-league matches to start the season. Kalama is the defending 2B District 4 champs, Castle Rock is a tough 1A team and Montesano is the defending 1A District 4 champions.

“We could be 2-1 but we’re 0-3,” Malunat said. “But I always tell the girls, in preseason, we could play teams that are pretty easy or tough games and grind it out and be ready for the postseason. We’ll plug away and keep working. It’ll pay off in the end. I’m hoping they’re patient enough and don’t get discouraged.”

Adna (0-3) hosts Onalaska (1-1) on Monday.

Riverhawks Hook Fishermen

Seven Toledo players notched goals as Toledo smashed its way to a 9-0 victory over Ilwaco on the road Wednesday.

Vanesa Rodriguez and Marina Smith each led the Riverhawks with a brace, with Smith adding an assist. The Riverhawks were coming off a 4-0 season-opening victory at home over Hoquiam Tuesday night.

“We started a little slow, as expected, and were a little tired,” Toledo coach Noel Vazquez said. “Once we got some goals, everything fell into place. We let the ball do the work.”

Briza Gallegos scored one goal and dishes out two assists, Paige Hill recorded one goal and one assist and Rose Dillon tallied a goal and two assists. Greenlee Clark also scored a goal, while Jazzy Zarate handed out an assist and Ryah Stanley finished with one goal and one assist.

For the second straight match, Toledo competed with just 11 players due to a couple being out.

“The girls came prepared knowing we had no subs,” Vazquez said. “We were playing smart.”

Toledo (2-0) next hosts Class 1A King’s Way Christian, which defeated defending Class 2B District 4 champion Kalama, 4-0, recently.

“We’re looking forward to playing Friday against a quality 1A team,” Vazquez said.
