The W.F. West girls bowling team started its season off with a bang Tuesday night, dispatching Tumwater at Westside Lanes in Olympia, 2050-1857 in total pins.

In two Baker format games, the Bearcats came out on top led by two phenomenal games from defending individual state champ Piper Chalmers, who bowled a 256 and 242, respectively. Emma Hamilton added a 171 and a 121, Savanna Hoyt-Siler bowled a 139 and 137, Tyran Ozretich bowled a 149 and a 160, and Clara Bunker scored a 146 and a 176 to round out Bearcat bowlers.

The Bearcats averaged a 186 in the first Baker game, and a 167 in the second. Chalmers averaged a 249 to lead the way.

"We needed Piper to step up and that is exactly what she did tonight,” Bearcats coach Don Bunker said. “It was a clutch performance that kept us in the match."

On the other side, Chalmers was nearly matched by the T-Birds’ best bowler, Hailey Hopkins, who bowled a 252 and a 235 in two games.

“It was a lot of fun watching two of the state’s best go to battle in the first match of the season,” assistant Bearcats coach Rich Bunker said.

Rounding out the Thunderbirds scorers were Mia Henry (146, 116), Ella Ferris (129, 148), Trysten Sarson (160, 147), and Kiarra Bluhm (93, 154).

Tumwater had a Baker score of 143 in the first game and 134 in the second, and totaled 1857 pins.

W.F. West will head back home for its second match of the season against crosstown rival Centralia at Fairway Lanes Thursday at 3 p.m.
