Bearcats Blast Bulldogs, 48-29, in Season Opener

DEFENSE: W.F. West Used Strong Defensive Pressure to Knock Down Montesano on the Road

Senior Drea Brumfield knocked in a game-high 23 points, including five 3-pointers, and W.F. West reeled off a late run to run away from Montesano for a 48-29 season-opening victory on the road Tuesday.

The Bearcats struck early with some tough defense to stun the Bulldogs from the get-go, holding Monte to just two points in the first quarter and 11 at the half.

“First game you never really know what to expect but we hit them pretty hard early,” W.F. West coach Kyle Karnofski said.

But the Bulldogs punched back, changing the tempo and putting the Bearcats on their heels for a bit, cutting the deficit to 31-23 in the third quarter. That woke the Bearcats back up as they rattled off a 14-0 run behind a couple big 3-pointers from Brumfield.

And W.F. West’s defense held strong in the second half, with Olivia Remund, Lexi Roberts and Mak Mencke clamping down in their rotations.

“We always talk about being a really good defensive team and those three were awesome,” Karnofski said. “They were phenomenal.”

Offensively, Roberts scored 12 points and Kyla McCallum added seven points and five rebounds. Roberts contributed five steals, three assists and two blocks.  Brumield nearly had a triple double with nine rebounds, 11 blocks, three assists and three steals.

W.F. West played 11 girls on the night and all tallied an offensive rebound.

“Overall, really impressed with our toughness and grit,” Karnofski said. “That is a really good team, a good win and a quality opponent.”

W.F. West (1-0) next travels to take on Class 4A Olympia in non-league play on Thursday.
