Basketball is a game of runs, and in W.F. West’s first game of the season against White River, perhaps no game in the county made that more apparent.
After a back-and-forth first half, which saw the Bearcats trailing by five at the break, the home squad went on a big run in the third quarter. W.F. West outscored the Hornets 17-5, and headed into the final quarter with a solid lead, but couldn’t hold on in a 66-65 loss.
White River scored 24 points in the fourth, to W.F. West’s 16, as the Bearcats couldn’t seal the deal against a typically strong 2A contender.
Dirk Plakinger led the Bearcats with 26 points, and Soren Dalan notched a 20-point, 15-rebound double-double in the defeat.
The Bearcats (0-1) will look to rebound in their second game against Ridgefield Wednesday. W.F. West beat the Spudders last season in the district semifinals, and will rematch in an early season contest.
