Bearcats Fall to Olympia in Defensive Battle

In a tough night finding the basket for both teams, Olympia was able to get more shots to fall as it handed visiting W.F. West a 38-35 defeat in non-league play on Thursday.

“It was an interesting game at the start,” W.F. West coach Kyle Karnofski said. “There was a lid on the basket for both teams.”

As W.F. West struggled to connect on shots, the Class 4A Bears reeled off an 8-0 run, part of a 16-point second quarter, to create the distance it needed to fend off the Bearcats the rest of the way.

“We had a hard night trying to get the ball in the bucket,” Karnofski said. “We got some shot attempts but couldn’t get them to fall. Olympia played well, had the energy and controlled the atmosphere.”

Pepperdine-commit Drea Brumfield scored a game-high 16 points for the Bearcats, while Amanda Bennett scored seven and Lexi Roberts added five.

Olympia was led by senior point guard Claudia Horton’s 12 points.

W.F. West (1-1 overall) will look to get back on track when it heads to Ridgefield on Monday for a non-league matchup.
