The W.F. West girls tennis team dropped a non-league contest on Tuesday, falling to Columbia River 4-2.
The Bearcats struggled in singles play, failing to win a single game in their three matches, but they won two of the three doubles matches.
“This is the team to beat in our district, and we were very competitive with them doubles-wise,” W.F. West coach Megan Wellander said. “I’m very pleased with the efforts that our doubles showed.”
Ellie Mittge and Manta Ceesay lost the first set in a tiebreak, but won the next two sets 7-5 to win in three. In the third set, they came back from a late 3-5 deficit, winning the next four games to win the match.
“Ellie and Manta battled in a huge way against a consistent, aggressive team,” Wellander said. “They were able to capitalize on crucial points and never gave up … Those two girls never give up.”
Lilly Hueffed and Katelyn Wood won a first set tiebreak in their match, and they took that momentum into the second set to win it in straight sets.
“Lilly and Katelyn were very strong,” Wellander said. “They were very competitive with their shots, they looked clean and crisp, they took over the net, and finished points well.”
The Bearcats will hit the road on Thursday, when they’ll take on Black Hills.
