W.F. West girls and boys track and field each came away with team victories in the Bearcats’ season opener at home on Wednesday.

The girls easily outdistanced the Highclimbers in a 113-31 blowout victory led by Hodaya Starr, who captured four victories on the day — two individual and two relays.

Star won the 100-meter dash (13.73) and the 200-meter dash (28.98), and ran legs in the 4x100 and 4x200 relays.

"Very happy with the depth of our girls' team opening their season,” W.F. West coach Amber Cruzan said. “(Starr) is looking very fast and consistent with some solid, early-season marks."

Kyla McCallum won the javelin with a throw of 112-6, which led the state in Class 2A at the time.

"McCallum's  mark in the javelin is a great mark this early, just about a foot shy of her PR and is state leading as of tonight,” Cruzan said.

On the boys side, the Bearcats were able to edge the Highclimbers, 77-67.

“Our boys had a hard fought meet,” Cruzan said.

Senior thrower/jumper Seth Hoff won the javelin with a Class 2A state-leading mark of 162-03, and also won the long jump with a leap of 19-10.

Dakota Collins and Elijah Annonen went one-two in pole vault and both sit among the top-three in the Class 2A.

W.F. West next heads competes in the Cardinal Relays at Orting High School at 11 a.m. on Saturday.
