The W.F. West girls soccer team ended non-league play on a high note on Monday, as the Bearcats topped Battle Ground on the road 5-0.

“We were excited to play against a 4A team,” W.F. West coach Kevin Schultz said. “And to have that scoreline is impressive.”

Emily Mallonee opened the scoring in the sixth minute off an assist from Ashlen Gruginski, and Jaelynn Fuentes scored an unassisted goal in the 30th minute to double the advantage before halftime.

Gruginski tallied another assist on a Rhylee Beebe goal three minutes into the second half, and she scored a goal of her own off a Fuentes in the 66th minute to make it 4-0. The fifth and final goal was an own goal that deflected in off a cross from Lauren Kelley.

“Whatever we did with the ball, we did a really good job of attacking quickly and putting the pressure on them,” Schultz said. “We were able to attack them efficiently and effectively.”

Battle Ground almost got on the board in the second half, but W.F. West goalkeeper Charlee Nelson made three saves in quick succession to keep the clean sheet intact.

“It was a tremendous play,” Schultz said.

Next up for the Bearcats (4-1) is EvCo play, which will begin with a home game against Black Hills on Thursday.
