Bearcats Sweep Season Series With Tigers

Jumping out to a 14-0 lead and outpacing its rivals the entire way, the W.F. West girls basketball team upended Centralia at home Tuesday, 62-25, to sweep the season series of the Swamp Cup.

Drea Brumfield led the Bearcats with a game-high 20 points, but it was another well-rounded team game from the home squad Tuesday.

“You always want to come out quick and fast,” Bearcats coach Kyle Karnofski said. “We have a lot of girls who can score and collectively, that makes us hard to guard.”

Brumfield was the only Bearcat in double figures, but 10 players found their names etched in the scorebook, and Karnofski was quick to point out the play of seniors Olivia Remund and Lexi Roberts for being steady and stepping up.

The Tigers were led by Makayla Chavez’s team-high 17 points, who Karnofski praised for her shooting and energy from the opposite bench.

“Centralia plays hard,” he said. “They made us work. They were tough and gritty all game long. They did not back down at all.”

The Tigers will play Aberdeen in their next game while the Bearcats have one last contest for senior night against Rochester on Thursday.
