Beavers Control Game in Win Over Riverhawks

After building up a nice lead in the first 20 minutes of play, the Tenino girls soccer team took home a 2-0 win against 2B Toledo Thursday night on the Black Top.

The Beavers (2-2-1) got a goal from Rilee Jones in the 10th minute off a nice feed from Kami Oliveira, and capitalized on an own goal in the 17th to round out their scores.

They outshot the Riverhawks, 19-4, and forced Toledo keeper Daphnie Bybee to make 14 saves. Tenino’s Trinity Tafoya was tested just twice and recorded two saves in the win.

“We controlled the game,” Beavers coach Dave Montgomery said. “Even though we had the two goals early, we were goal-dangerous all game. We were peppering a lot of shots straight at Bybee. She’s a good enough goalie, if you hit it at her, she’s going to corral it.”

Montgomery praised his midfield in Oliveira, Nicole Fralick, and Cheyenne Rossow for controlling the pace of the game and making good connections with the back line and forwards.

“It’s something that we talked about pregame,” Montgomery said. “We didn't’ want to just beat the ball around, we needed to control the tempo throughout and connect on passes on our defense, through our mids and into our attacking players. When we did that, it looked fantastic.”

The Beavers play next against White Salmon Tuesday at home while the Riverhawks battle Elma on the road Saturday.
