Beavers Go Cold in Loss to Elma

When you score two points in a quarter, you aren’t going to win many basketball games. Tenino boys hoops coach Joe Chirhart said as much after his squad mustered just two in the third quarter of their game against Elma, and fell for the second time in league Tuesday night, 58-41.

“Our third quarter was trouble,” Chirhart said. “We ran out of gas in the fourth quarter and got slappy and fouled them.”

Despite staying in the game, and pulling the deficit to as few as two points with four minutes left, the Beavers (5-6, 1-2 1A Evergreen) got tired, and sent the Eagles to the line 21 times in the fourth quarter. That free throw discrepancy, mixed with the Beavers inconsistency, cost them their second league contest to a red-hot Elma team.

“We don't do the little things yet,” Chirhart said. “Finishing layups, sliding on help defense, things like that. Every game we learn and continue to get better.”

The Beavers got a team-high 17 points and 11 rebounds from Takari Hickle, who was the only scorer in double-digits for Tenino. They’ll look to bounce back against league-leading Eatonville on Thursday at home.
