Beavers Let Lead Slip Away in Series Opener with Cruisers

TENINO — Playing just one game due to rainy conditions, the Tenino baseball team had a lead through five innings, but couldn’t hold on after a late Eatonville barrage in a 9-5 defeat in its league opener Thursday afternoon.

The Beavers (5-4, 0-1 1A Evergreen) got off to a hot start, building up a 3-0 lead after two innings after Cody Strawn hit a home run in the second inning, but began to falter on the mound in the late innings.

Kellan Knox got the start, and had no earned runs with eight strikeouts over three innings, but errors and walks began to mount up on the Beavers, who couldn’t find their consistency on defense.

The sixth inning decided it, with the Cruisers racking up four runs and taking advantage of adverse conditions.

At the plate, Austin Gonia chipped in an RBI on a 1 for 2 day, and Kaden Sayamnet went 2 for 3 with two runs and a run batted in.

The Beavers will look to respond against the Cruisers in Eatonville Friday in a doubleheader starting at 3 p.m.
