With 4.5 seconds left on the clock against Glacier Peak, W.F. West coach Kyle Karnofski called a timeout. He knew that the Bearcats would have enough time to run a play, one that could win them the game if executed properly.
After the timeout was over, the Bearcats executed the call to perfection. Working off a screen from Julia Dalan, Dilyn Boeck kicked the ball out to an open Rhylee Beebe, who drained a buzzer-beating three-pointer to give W.F. West a 53-50 win in its final game at the Top of the Peak Tournament.
“To hit a buzzer beater, that’s kind of what you do as a kid in the backyard,” Karnofski said. “Rhylee stepped up and knocked it down … It was really cool for her to get that opportunity. She played really well in all three games, and that was kind of the final stamp on it.”
The game was tight the entire way through, but the Bearcats were working from behind nearly the entire way.
After tying the game with about a minute remaining, Glacier Peak had the ball and a chance to take a late lead with about 30 seconds to play.
W.F. West had timeouts to give, but Karnofski opted to play defense. The Grizzlies missed their shot, and Amanda Bennett came away with the rebound to set up the final possession.
“It kinda solidified the whole weekend for us,” Karnofski said. “It was fun to celebrate and see the kids smiling and having a good time with it.”
Boeck and Dalan combined for 36 points, while Bennett finished with six and Grace Simpson added five. Beebe finished with four, and Kaitlyn Chloupek added two.
The Bearcats (10-1) are now off until Tuesday, Jan. 7, when they’ll host Tumwater to start league play.
