Bill to create Mt. St. Helens license plate set for committee hearing

While Washington’s standard license plate already features Mount Rainier, the state’s second most famous peak could soon have a plate of its own.

The House Transportation Committee will hold a hearing Wednesday on legislation that would create a license plate that depicts Mount St. Helens. On Tuesday, the Washington state Senate approved Senate Bill 5590 on a 47 to 2 vote.

In her remarks on the Senate floor, bill sponsor Sen. Lynda Wilson, R-Vancouver, noted the historic nature mountain’s 1980 eruption.

“It is probably one of the most iconic landmarks there are out there if not in Washington, then at least in my district,” Wilson said.

According to Wilson, money from sales of the license plate would help manage the mountain’s landscape.

The Transportation Committee will meet on Wednesday at 4 pm.
