Cardinals Can’t Hold on to Lead Against Comets

Leading for three quarters and then some, the Winlock boys basketball team fell apart offensively late in a 63-57 loss to Naselle at home Saturday afternoon.

Heading into the fourth quarter with a 9-point lead, the Cardinals were outscored 19-4 the rest of the way, having a hard time getting back into an offensive rhythm and dropping their final non-league home game of the season to the Comets.

“I was happy with the way we played the first half,” Cardinals coach Cole Doughty said. “In the second half we got into foul trouble and in the fourth quarter just couldn’t find a way to score. Credit to Naselle, they made some great defensive adjustments in the second half and the Lindstrom brothers hit a lot of shots.”

The Lindstroms, Jacob and Kolten, combined for 35 points, to lead the road team Saturday.

The Cardinals were led by Carter Svenson and Lincoln Ruiz’s 12 points, with Payton Sickles and Landon Cline also chipping in another 11 points a piece.

“Unfortunately for us we just struggled to find a way to score in the fourth quarter,” Doughty said. “This was a good learning lesson for our guys that three quarters isn’t enough, and we have to put together a full game if we want to win.”

Winlock returns to league play against Adna at home on Tuesday.
