Cardinals Remain Alive in District Tourney

Winlock went 1-1 on the opening day of the 2B District 4 tournament Saturday and are still in contention to earn one of the district’s six state playoff berths.

The Cardinals (6-7) fell to 2B Pacific League champion Raymond (15-1) in the opening round (25-8, 25-5, 25-8). Winlock had no answer for the Seagulls’ 5-foot-11 powerhouse outside hitter Kyra Gardner, who’s headed to Washington State University on a basketball scholarship.

“We just couldn’t keep up with (Gardner),” Winlock coach Chastity Pennington said. “She is a force on the court.”

In the loser’s bracket, facing a loser-out match, Winlock recovered to sweep Northwest Christian (Lacey) 25-21, 25-21, 25-18 to remain alive.

Addison Hall and Kindyl Kelly each led the Cardinals with 11 kills apiece. Madison Vigre led in serving on the day with 18 points earned, four of those being aces.

Winlock will next face Central 2B League foe Stevenson in another loser-out contest at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday in Onalaska.
