The Winlock football team blew its hosts from Evergreen Lutheran out of the water Saturday, putting up 10 touchdowns in a 75-32 rout at Franklin Pierce High School in Tacoma.
The Cardinals reached the end zone five times in the first quarter alone, the start of a unending wave of rushing yardage and points.
Winlock finished with 490 yards on the ground as a group. Of those, 102 came from senior quarterback Payton Sickles, who scored touchdowns of 13, 25, and 22 yards in the first quarter and added a 1-yard plunge in the second. A hundred more came from Chase Scofield on just two touchdown runs – one of 40 yards and one of 60 – in the fourth quarter.
Sickles also completed both of his passes for 12 yards.
After scoring 40 points in the opening 12 minutes, the Cardinals kept the pressure on, leading 53-0 before Evergreen Lutheran finally got on the scoreboard before halftime. Despite the running clock in the second half, Winlock still managed to hit paydirt three more times.
The Cardinals (2-0) will get a huge test to open league play, hosting Naselle next Friday.
