The Centralia City Council on Tuesday approved a $2.91 million contract to excavate stormwater storage and conduct fish habitat restoration on China Creek on city property between Gold Street and the railroad.

According to council reports, the long-awaited project is the second in a series of projects to reduce flooding impacts to downtown Centralia and provide fish restoration in the creek.

The city received five bids for the project with Lynwood-based Glacier Environmental Services winning the contract. The project was estimated by city engineers to cost between $2.3 million and $2.7 million.

The city will pay for the project through $2.3 million in funding retained by the Chehalis River Basin Flood Authority through the Washington Recreation and Conservation Office. The additional costs will likely be covered by a loan from the city’s wastewater department.

Kim Ashmore, the city’s public works director, said the project is expected to start within 45 days.
