Colorful dresses, lights and wigs will take the stage at the Evergreen Playhouse in Centralia for the period piece production of “Charley’s Aunt,” written by Brandon Thomas and directed by Emilie Brown.
The comedic farce tells the story as two friends, Jack Chesney and Charley Wykeham, convince their friend from Oxford, Lord Fancourt Babberly, to impersonate Charley’s wealthy aunt to their love interests after the real aunt cancels her trip.
“As ‘Charley's Aunt,’ this charming frump is introduced to the ladies, to Jack's father and to Stephen Spettigue, Amy's guardian. When the real aunt turns up, classic comic confusion ensues as Fancourt Babberley, posing as ‘Charley's Aunt,’ tricks Spettigue into agreeing to the marriage of his ward, the real aunt marries Jack's father, Jack gets Miss Verdun, and Fanny Babs regains the fortune he lost at gambling as well as the girl he loves,” the play synopsis states.
“It’s so silly and fun. It’s a period piece so you do have a bit of a different language … It’s so fun that you don’t really realize and you’re just immersed back in that time period,” said Brittany Wilcox, who plays Ela Delahay.
“I think the look of the show is really fun too,” Wilcox said. “... The costumes are so beautiful and it’s a whole experience. If you want to laugh, come see it.”
The show will run on weekends through Feb. 9. Performances on Fridays and Saturdays will take place at 7:30 p.m., and the Sunday matinee begins at 2 p.m. Tickets cost $17 for adults and $14 for students and seniors, and can be purchased at evergreenplayhouse.com or at the door.
The actors will also host a special “pay what you can” benefit performance on Thursday, Jan. 30, at 7:30 p.m.
The Evergreen Playhouse is located at 226 W. Center St. in Centralia.
