A Chehalis man charged for allegedly breaking a man’s leg in a Walmart parking lot in April has pleaded guilty to third-degree assault and has been released from the Lewis County Jail to serve 12 months in community custody.

Richard A. Walton Jr. was sentenced to serve 35 days in jail, with credit for the 35 days he has been in custody since his arrest on April 30.

Walton was arrested after the victim told police Walton had attacked him after another man and woman accused the victim of taking the woman’s cellphone.

Walton initially told police and the court he acted in self defense after the alleged victim attacked him.

The court will determine restitution owed to the victim at a later time.
